André J. Washington is the State President of the A. Philip Randolph Institute Ohio Chapter. The A. Philip Randolph Institute is an organization for African-American trade unionists, a constituency group of the AFL-CIO, that advocates social, labor, and economic change at the state and federal level, using legal and legislative means
André is an active member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), the League of Women Voters, the Central Ohio Labor Council, and the Labor Council for Latino American Advancement, just to name a few. He is also a lifetime member of the NAACP, where he is currently serving as the Ohio State Conference Treasurer.
André started his labor career at the University of Michigan Medical Center, AFSCME Local 1583 where he worked for 13 years before being hired as an organizer for AFSCME Council 25 in Detroit. He helped organize the Detroit Medical Center hospitals. He is currently a Field Representative/Special Projects Coordinator for the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE/AFSCME Local 4).
